“It is the first time in our nation’s U.S. military     history that an animal, a dog, has been
elevated to national monument status by law.”

Out of over 200 dogs nominated in the U.S. for the 2008 American Kennel Club Awards for Canine Excellence (ACE), 35 dogs were selected as Honorees! We are extremely THRILLED. and humbled to announce that our MWD Benny B163 (Ret.) was selected for Honorable Mention in the "Therapy Dog" category! As an Honorable Mention recipient, Benny has received an engraved bronze collar medallion for his achievement.

I would also like to mention that retired MWD Lex, injured by shrapnel when his handler, CPL Dustin Lee was killed in Iraq has WON the Law Enforcement category!  Another  MWD, Lucca, has received Honorable Mention in the Law Enforcement category as well! Retiring MWDs have MUCH to offer the world after their days of military service to our country are over!!
In receiving this special award, I am most mindful that our Benny could easily have been euthanized had we not found him in November 2007! We need to do our utmost for these noble Hero MWDs who have served our great nation so faithfully!
God bless all our MWDs...and God Bless America!

Aah, The Golden Years...
Announcing the Winners of our Photo Contest for Senior Dogs
We’ve been inundated with photos of beautiful, older dogs in the past few months. It’s been a joy to see all the wonderful pets who are still leading active lives, often doing pet therapy or some other kind of work, and, of course, are still the apples of their owners’ eyes. We hope you’ll enjoy seeing the four dogs whose photos — and stories — we just couldn’t resist.
Grand prize winner Angelo will receive $100 worth of Dog Chow from Nestlé Purina PetCare and a pair of Dog Chow jackets for his family. Benny, our second place winner, will find food and jackets in his mailbox, as well. Third place winner Katie and honorable mention Roxanne both win food, too. We’ll also be sending all the winners a 2009 DOG FANCY Year-In-A-Box Calendar, now available at bookstores.

Angelo, Golden Retriever, 13
“Angelo is my ‘heart dog.’ As his age slows down, it does not slow down his spirit and will to live. He wakes up each day with a smile, ready to face the day. To Angelo, every day is a celebration. And to us, each day is a gift!”
Jeanne Urna, Lincoln Park, N.J.
MWD Benny B163 (Ret.),
German Shepherd Dog, 11
“Benny is my adopted, retired Air Force military working dog who was scheduled for euthanasia. Benny’s devotion and love touch my heart deeply. He’s my gift from God, my one-in-a-lifetime canine love. Now
a certified therapy dog, Benny gives much joy and love to others, too.
He’s amazing!”
Deborah Kandoll, Pikeville, N.C.
Katie, Wire Fox Terrier, 11
“Katie is a registered therapy dog and brings smiles to residents at assisted living facilities every Tuesday. She is also involved with the SPCA’s humane education program. She visits a first grade class and alternative school to teach young people how to care for and love a pet. But most of all she is my best friend. I love her with all my heart.”
Ruth Masucci, Aiken, S.C.

Roxanne, German Shepherd Dog-Rottweiler mix, 12
This loyal and loving friend has been with me through some very hard times. A warm paw, a toy, a concerned look: She wouldn’t let me feel sorry for myself. Little did she know that she was the best medicine ever; she saved my life. I’ll be forever grateful for Roxanne.”

Retired MWD Bino C152 wins 2011 AHA Military Hero  Dog Category !!
Dutch shepherd Bino served the U.S. Army’s 35th Military Police Detachment at Ft. Gordon, Ga., as a Narcotics Detection/Patrol K-9 for almost 11 years. He deployed in Iraq for 14 months, as well as serving special missions with the Border Patrol in the war on drugs. Upon retirement, Bino learned a new skill set as a post-traumatic stress disorder Demo Service Dog. He and his handler have gone on numerous weekly “training missions” to teach Ft. Bliss, Texas, Wounded Warriors and their dog partners the do’s and don’ts of public-access training. Bino shows them how to navigate without distraction or panic attacks in grocery stores, busy malls, on elevators/escalators, and through airport security. He is a true example of a tirelessly serving K-9 hero who never quits giving.

The 2011 American Humane Association Hero Dog Awards were broadcast on Veterans Day, Novemeber 11, 2011. Most civilians aren't aware of the uncredited role of Military Working Dogs. On average, each military working dog is responsible for 150 lives saved. Debbie Kandoll,MWD Adoptions Founder, talked about how a community of people are working to assist in the adoption of retiring Military Working Dogs when their distinguished careers are completed and how these dogs could and should be reclassified and receive official recognition from the U.S. Military.
